A first look at Ontario election online buzz

I know that many people are anxiously awaiting charts, graphs, observations and analysis of the Ontario provincial election. So, I took a few minutes out to fire up Sysomos MAP and check out the chatter.

It’s no surprise that related online traffic has nearly tripled over the last week. We’re already witnessing an even greater spike in online traffic today — the first of many for the next few weeks. By 11:00am, Twitter dominated online discussion about Ontario politics and the election with nearly 800 tweets.

There’s a lot of link sharing taking place over Twitter. People are linking to party platforms and third-party platform comparison pieces, news articles, photos and blog posts. There’s a broad range of issues being discussed today: energy, healthcare, work, community, tax and tuition. We can expect the conversation to become more focused, following the narrative arc of the election as the campaigns progress. Currently, the Liberal party platform is the subject of the most tweets.

An analysis of 3,000 tweets over the last nine days shows the online conversation skews male (66%).

I’ll expand the nature of my coverage and analysis as the election progresses.

    Hi, Mark –

Interesting perspective on the discussion centred on Ontario’s Election. A startup I’m friendly with in Montreal has just launched an initiative in conjunction with the Toronto Board of Trade to provide ongoing analysis of election discussion as well. You should have a look at the portal TBOT set up to showcase the same conversation. You can find it here: http://bit.ly/qENHgS.

    Let me know your thoughts!

    Best,

    Mark
