HP OfficeJet J6480: Intermittent double-sided printing

I love my HP OfficeJet J6480 All-in-One with its ease of use and the ability to scan, print and fax over my home network (among other cool features).  Most importantly, I love it because it can print double-sided — a feature that figured prominently in my purchase decision.

In theory, it prints double-sided.  As it turns out, this great feature is also a great frustration.

My printer has a mind of its own and seems to decide when it will print double-sided and when it will waste my paper.  Despite my specifically setting the double-sided printing in my default printing profile and double-checking before each print, it still makes its own decisions.  Most notably, it will not print web pages double sided and seems to dislike printing double-sided, two-per-page print outs from Adobe Reader.  It’s completely random when it will print Word and Powerpoint documents double-sided.

Do you have a similar problem with your HP OfficeJet J6480?  More importantly, do you have a solution?

Mark – Oy! I read your post and thought, I could have written this! I bought an HP Officejet J6480 and, just as you found, the machine is pretty much unable to print double-sided. We tried everything…three times.

    Not only that but it takes F O R E V E R to print.

We were also very unimpressed with the wireless setup instructions. We did get wireless printing to work, but not because HP helped any.

So – since you posted this, has anyone come forward with a solution?

Jim S – how did you get network printing working? If I connect the printer to the router/switch with the ethernet cable then my wireless PC will print. But if I unattach the printer from ethernet and instead connect to my home network with wireless then nothing prints. Can access the print (web interface) and there is other forms of communication happening, such as the printer being detected – but nothing prints. Go back the ethernet (from printer connection only) and all is OK.
Did you get true wireless printing to work? Is both the printer and PC (or in my case Mac) on wireless? Any help appreciated.

Hi dudes, i’am sorry to tell you that i have the same problem and i cannot find a solution anywere :(.
HOWEVER, i’ve figured out that the source of the problem is: MICROSOFT WORD, TA DA!!.
when i try to print double sided documents directly from MSword i have that problem, however, if i convert the file to a pdf and print it from there, it works properly.

    Good luck!
