Last night I blogged about the apparently fake Twitter account @DKonstantinakos which was venturing into libel territory in the way it presented Conservative candidate for Ottawa Centre, Damian Konstantinakos (whose real Twitter handle is @votedamiancpc). In additional to embarrassment for the candidate, fake accounts can cause cascading embarrassment for voters and other candidates — which was the case in this instance.

I should qualify that a parody account can be funny and welcome in the public discourse provided it’s identified as such (I even follow a few). In this particular case, the account presented itself as being official, suggesting the content was created and published by Mr. Konstantinakos himself.

The fake account appears to have been voluntarily removed (rather than suspended). Part of me would still love to see a public apology from the person who ran it.
