The first look at election results online

It’s hard to say if 7:00pmET marked the beginning of the media blackout or the wild rumpus of tweets.

In the past hour we’ve seen everything from outrage that Newfoundland’s VOCM stopped its online stream (many accused Elections Canada of shutting them down when they were proactively acting in compliance with the Canada Elections Act by disabling their Internet broadcast during the blackout), surprise that TweetTheResults.ca had elected to shut down its site to avoid breaking the law (they’ll be back at 10pmET) and a steady stream of maritime polling results and declarations.

There’s even been tweets from people who clearly weren’t aware sharing election results online before 10pmET is a problem and others who shared completely fabricated election results (in fairness, they were clearly jokes).

Some foreigners are openly tweeting the results on behalf of Canadians, noting they may be tweeting garbage but that’s what they’re being fed.

Ellis, Stephanie and I have our favourites which we will gladly share later tonight. Maybe we’ll do a wrap-up podcast. In the meantime, I can only shares some stats. And with that, I can tell you we identified 142 election results tweets leading up to 7:45pmET.
