Communication Studies Professor Dr. Cori E. Dauber and Multimedia Laboratory Director Mark Robinson (both at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) study videos. More significantly, they study videos as tools in the terrorist toolkit and how governments attempt to produce effective counter-terrorism videos of their own.

I met Dr. Dauber at a conference on social media and cyber influence in April. We had a long and engaging discussion about visual style and making a meaningful connection with the viewing audience. Since then, we’ve exchanged occassional observations on the impact of video in communications and engagement over email.

It was the essay “ISIS and the Hollywood Visual Style” she co-authored with Mr. Robinson that finally motivated me to do an interview on the subject.
